There is an active open-pit mining operation on the edge of the Frank Church Wilderness of No Return. It’s located past the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge up Loon Creek. You get the best view of the operation from the top of the winding switch back near the Loon Creek Summit.
Directions
Drive north of Stanley on highway 75. Turn north near Sunbeam and head past the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge. Turn left, following the sign towards the Frank Church. Continue up the switch back to the edge of the wilderness.
